A teachable moment.

I attended a private Jewish school from kindergarten through eighth grade. My overall experience there was pleasant enough for the school to earn the moniker "Armpit Of The Universe" on good days, and on bad days "Someplace Anatomically Lower and Less Hygenic."

But half a decade is a long time to hold a grudge. And today I'm burying the hatchet for good, in response to this email sent to all parents of San Diego Jewish Academy students. For the first time ever, my alma mater will have a school-administration-sanctioned Gay-Straight Alliance.

"There is certainly no consensus among Orthodox, Modern Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Jewish authorities on how we deal with and relate to issues surrounding gender identity, and SDJA views the dialogue and debate on this subject as being inherently Jewish and a legitimate part of a pluralistic, community school....After careful consideration, the Administration has approved the application for this high school club. We believe it is our responsibility to provide students with a supportive, educational environment where they can think freely, be challenged as to their thinking and grapple with controversial, challenging issues within a Jewish environment and context."
